Not technology. Technology gets copied overnight. I mean the avant-garde. The willingness to actually think about the user. That, you cannot copy. Not because the knowledge is hidden—it's all out there. It's that people choose not to. And the reason behind that choice runs deeper than any product roadmap. It comes down to how advanced a society's culture actually is.
Let me give you one example. Google has a page called takeout.google.com. It's beautiful. Clean. Generous. It lets you export every piece of data you've ever handed Google—across every product you use—in organized, clearly labeled formats, with settings and options for each. A data export page. Not a product launch. Not a revenue driver. Just a quiet act of respect toward the user.
I counted. I have data across 65 Google products. Sixty-five. And every single one of them is documented on that page with format choices, inclusion settings, the works.
Here's what makes it extraordinary: Google did not have to do this. That's point one. When you do something you're not obligated to do, and you do it beautifully, that means you care. Point two: the sheer scope—65 products, each handled with detail and clarity—is its own kind of discipline. Point three, and this is the one that really gets me: every other platform designs the exit experience to punish you. Dark patterns. Guilt trips. Vanishing buttons. They make leaving feel like a hostage negotiation. Google just... holds the door open. It's the behavior of someone who's genuinely confident. Mature. Someone who's seen enough breakups to know that making a scene only embarrasses yourself.
Now compare that to what I go through every single month trying to download a bank statement from one of China's biggest banks.
Dongle. Check. Parallel Windows setup. Check. Wrong password, try again, try again, try again—fifteen tries, multiple pop-ups, bizarre security theater that would feel dated in 2003. Two hours. Every month. Just to get a PDF of my own money.
This bank made over $100 billion in profit in 2025. One hundred billion dollars. It is, by assets, one of the largest financial institutions on the planet. You think they can't fix the online banking? They could hire the best UX teams in the world, build ten different apps, and still have money left over for a small island nation. The engineers exist. The money exists. The time exists.
They just don't care.
That's it. That's the whole gap. Not talent. Not resources. Not even strategy. Just the cultural instinct—or the absence of it—to give a damn about the person on the other side of the screen.
